This is how it started.....
Recently my friend was saying, he is completely bored and boredom is killing him....
Well, I quickly noticed that he is not the kind of person who says he is bored that easily.... Well something really is wrong....
But I don't know clearly what it was..... only fact that lingered in my mind is, he is forcing the boredom on himself...
I used to get bored a lot of time... not new for me... in fact, the only thing we would feel when we are bored is that 'we are bored'....
I know how it would feel.... like I do not want to do anything and that makes the time dull and slow and I would hate it, and that would make me so unenergized and that will cause more of non-activity and boredom increases rapidly to a new level...
Somewhere at a tricky little shadowed corner of our mind we knew that boredom is not something that is outside of us though we always talk about it as an external thing....
Boredom is not forced on us by outside force or factor.
It is a resolve to not indulge in anything causes the disease called boredom.
This was so clear to me when my friend experienced this disease than the time I experienced it.
So I had to create a quote 'Boredom is simply a refusal to engage in anything'.
And I had to write an entire blog also, not because I'm bored but to record my idea ;)
I disagree man ... boredom is not caused due to a resolve to not do anything ... everyone who is bored would jump at a chance to do something to chase it away dont u think?
ReplyDeleterather its a state of mind where you really dont know what to do ... a state of emptiness ...
@Arun: ha haha :) if people are so desperate to get out of boredom, it shouldn't take a flash of a second for anyone right?
ReplyDeleteOne thing is clear. Philosophy doesn't get into you easily ;)
@Dobby:
ReplyDeleteIt is true that anything we 'think' is completely up to us. We can think that we are happy or we can think that we are miserable. It is completely up to our mind. Unless, we are physically forced to feel some sensation, everything else is purely a mind-game.
There could be a lot of activities we normally engage to be engaged. When suddenly all the activities are repugnant, and you don't feel like doing anything is when you feel bored.
Suppose, if you/your-friend play CS or AoM or plays an instrument or write blogs or watch a movie to be engaged and not feel boredom, and suddenly everything seems uninteresting... that feeling is what we can call boredom... you lose interest in everything... the same game or the same movie would have been extremely joyful couple of days back (or couple or hours back), but suddenly, you disgust the game/movie/instrument/song...
Your friend is nearby, but you don't feel like talking to him... your friend is online, but you don't feel like chatting with him... Your favorite game icon is in your desktop, but you don't feel like clicking it (and playing it)... your favorite music instrument is in front of you, but you don't feel like playing it... your 1TB hard disk with 1000 movies in it is reachable, but you don't feel like watching a movie... that feeling is boredom...
It is not that people enjoy being bored... it is semi-forced, and semi-self-indulgent... once the boredom is gone, the same friend, the same game, the same instrument everything will feel like heaven...
now if you have read till this point, you were bored of you life and wanted to do nothing of your interest... that is also boredom...
@Amudhan: Well said.... I can see that you are actually saying refusal is playing there ;)
